Report of T.B. Bayley, Chairman of the Lancashire Quarter Sessions at Manchester, on Samuel Dunkerly, journeyman calico printer from Ashton-under-Lyne, committed to prison by Reverend Prescott in October 1790, for leaving work unfinished 'at the usual turnout of Journeymen...' in June 1790. There is also a letter from John Lowe, 1 of the prisoner's employers/prosecutors. Grounds for clemency: 'The offence was occasioned by the refusal to comply with regulations and restraints inconsistent with his contract and every way injurious to him', previous good character, employers has received 'Satisfaction and they made representation to Prescott to release the prisoner, prisoner is now sick in prison (disputed by Bayley) and has a 'distressed' wife and family to support. Initial sentence: 3 months imprisonment. Recommendation: a pardon.
