Report of J. Fenton on 1 individual petition (prisoner) on behalf of Richard Thompson, a publican at Slyne in Lancashire (and previously a seaman), convicted at the Michaelmas Lancashire Quarter Sessions on 7 October 1788, for receiving stolen property consisting of 2 pairs of trousers, 1 frock and a pair of buckles. There is also a covering letter from the Admiralty Office. Grounds for clemency: has a wife and family dependent on charity, prisoner had accepted the articles as security when a customer was unable to pay for his drink, there was no aggravating circumstances to the crime, has already served nearly 2 years imprisonment, has 28 years experience at sea, had twice been taken by the French ' & cast away twice', is able bodied and willing to enlist in HM. Navy. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Navy.
