Report of William Mainwaring on 1 individual petition (prisoner) on behalf of John Mathews, seaman, convicted (with Robert Walker and John Kitchen) at the Middlesex Quarter Sessions on 28 May 1784, for stealing lead, property of Thomas Hesketh, in St. Pancras in Middlesex. Evidences supplied by Richard temple, watchman and Edward Lee. The judge states that house breaking is common and that the 3 men 'were undoubtedly common Thieves'. Grounds for clemency: served his country in the West Indies and America on the St. Alban, has already served 6 years and 3 months in prison and is willing to enlist in HM. Navy. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: speaks against mercy.
