Description

Report of William Powney on Robert Silver, convicted at the Berkshire Quarter Sessions at Newbury, for stealing a copper, value 6d, property of Anna Maria Tighe, on 10 January 1786. There is also a letter from Lord Craven in response to a request of information on the prisoner where he explains he has sent the request to Powney. Powney considers the prisoner to be much engaged in crime as a deer stealer (the 'Gentlemen of the Forrest' were active in his conviction), robber of hen roosts and 'a terror to the County'. His return would be considered by several magistrates as very 'prejudicial to the neighbourhood'. Grounds for clemency: none given. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy.
