Report of C.T. Kerby, on ------ Larkin/Lurkin, indicted at the Southampton/Hampshire Quarter Sessions, for stealing fowls and geese (but convicted of either fowls or geese, the indictment being too imprecise). The judge does not have his notebook with him (containing all the details of the case) but he can remember all the 'principal circumstances'. The court considered the prisoner to be part of a large gang who had 'infested the Town of Alton [in Hampshire] where he lived'. The crime of stealing poultry from farmers was considered to have grown greatly in the county and a transportation sentence was deemed as a necessary example. Grounds for clemency: previous service in the militia where he had a good character. Initial sentence: transportation. Recommendation: to enlist as a marine or in HM. Navy.
Folios 420-421.
