Report of Thomas Evance on 1 collective petition/reference (2 people, the keeper and chaplain at Southwark Gaol) on behalf of Thomas Green, convicted at the Surrey Quarter Sessions at Kingston upon Thames on 3 October 1786, for stealing 1 velvet waistcoat, 1 pair of cotton stockings and 1 shirt, value 11/-, property of William Wellings, innkeeper at Weybridge in Surrey, and other cotton goods, value 19/-, property of William Skeat, on 16 August 1786. Grounds for clemency: has already spent 4 years in prison where he has behaved well and attended devine worship, and that mercy/a pardon may provide a good example to other prisoners (to behave well). Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: mercy.
