Report of Richard Burke, Recorder of Bristol, on 1 individual petition (prisoner) and 1 collective petition (39 people, from Bristol including the vicar of Temple and Ordinary of Bristol Newgate, and the prosecutor) on behalf of William Baker, brazier in Bristol, convicted at the Bristol Quarter Sessions on 12 January 1789, for receiving stolen goods (lead). There is also a letter from Samuel Worral, secretary, and a further letter from Burke. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, has a wife and young child now unprovided for, has been imprisoned for more than 12 months (at the time of the petition) and has behaved well, is repentant, it was a small amount of lead, promises future good behaviour and offers to transport himself. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Recommendation: to transport himself.
