Report of Mr C. Kirby, Recorder of Southampton, on Mary Purkess convicted at Southampton in Hampshire, for stealing 1 gold ring, property of Rosannah Talbot. Grounds for clemency: error in the indictment, the prisoner (being a married woman) was incapable of owning such property (even her own wedding ring) and the indictment should have read that the ring was her husband's property. Initial sentence: not given. Recommendation: pardon.
