Report of William Mainwaring, Chairman of the Middlesex Quarter Sessions, on 1 individual petition (prisoner, written in French) on behalf of Peter/Pierre Guedon, convicted at the Middlesex Quarter Sessions on 14 April 1790, for an assault on James Chapman, Officer of Excise, on 2 August 1789. Evidences supplied by James Chapman, Abraham Joseph Baert, wax chandler (prisoner in Newgate for forgery); Mrs Herone, Baert's mother-in-law, and the prisoner. Grounds for clemency: confined in a cold damp room causing ill health which is endangering his life, innocent of the crime, committed through imprudence not lack of respect for the law, he is a foreigner, has a family to support and previous good character. Initial sentence: 14 days in prison. Recommendation: no mercy.
