Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 collective petition (8 people, including the prisoner) on behalf of Robert Farrer, seaman, indicted (with Robert Briggs, mariner) at the Old Bailey in December 1789, for stealing 3 woollen cloth coats and other articles, value £7, property of William or Samuel Clark/e, on 2 November 1789[?], from the house of Robert Hinton of Billingsgate in London. Evidences supplied by Samuel/William Clark/e, seaman; William Reilly, servant to Mr Hinton; John Freeyer and the prisoner. Prisoner was found guilty to the value of 39/-. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, is contrite, crime committed in an unguarded moment, is a seaman of much experience and has previously severed in HM. Navy, and that Briggs, his partner in crime, had received mercy (enlist in HM Navy and to find sureties for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence). Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: mercy, to enlist in HM Navy and to find sureties for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence. Folios 339-342.
