1790 Dec 10
Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on William Burke, convicted (tried with George Nugent) in September 1785, for an assault on Joseph Walker, and stealing a silver watch, value 30 guineas, at Holborn in Middlesex on 1 August 1785. Walker had been returning from 'his Benefit Club' at the time of the theft. Evidences supplied by Joseph Walker, William Glover, James Banks, James Wayland, Hugh O'Donnel, James Mayes, patrol officer; John Galwin, night watch/crier; William Hounsworth and the prisoner. The judge stated he was 'satisfied with the Verdict of the Jury - The Prisoner having no Character given at the Trial'. Grounds for clemency: prisoner ran when he heard the watchman's rattle because he did not want to get 'taken up disorderly in the street'. Initial sentence: not given. Recommendation: transportation for life.
Folios 336-338.
