Description

Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 collective petition (3 people, all London aldermen, and 1 of those a Member of Parliament) on behalf of William Charlton alias Charington, apprentice bookbinder, convicted (with John Wright) at the Old Bailey in September 1789, for an assault on William Javoux/Jeavox, a gentleman's servant and stealing 9/6 from him. The crime was committed between Islington and Ball's Pond in Middlsex on their way down from Epping Forest in Essex. Evidences supplied by William Javoux/Jeavox, Moses Lidiard, coachman to Marquis D'Haulefort, and the prisoner. Grounds for clemency: youth (19 years at the time of the report), first offence, previous good character supported by 'nine Witnesses of repute', was drawn into the crime by Wright, father was of good character and property (runs a Sacking Manufactory at St Luke Old Street in Middlesex), a near relation has offered to take him to Jamaica, the prisoner's employer (Ann Walker to whom he was apprenticed) said he was at home on the night of the robbery, and he offers to transport himself or enlist in HM. Navy and provide security for the same. Initial sentence: death, commuted to transportation for life. Recommendation: to transport himself for life and to find security for the same.
