Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 collective petition (7 people, from St Giles in the Field in Middlesex, including the minister and a churchwarden) on behalf of William Brown, sailor, convicted in April 1786, for stealing 6 pieces of printed cotton cloth (160 yards), value £20, property of Henry Thwaites, of High Holborn in Middlesex, on 7 November 1785[?]. There is a letter from the prisoner to his father detailing his navy service and asking him to persevere with his petition for mercy 'as there is many [petitions for mercy] goe Unnoticed for want of proper attendance'; and a letter to his aunt and uncle asking them also to make an application on his behalf. Evidences supplied by William Bradley, apprentice to Mr Thwaites; Mr Gibson, Edward Nicholson, servant to Mr Gibson; John Joseph, William Ewan and John Prosser. Grounds for clemency: is contrite, has served 4 years of his sentence, promise of future good behaviour, prisoner is a seaman, has served in HM. Navy during 'the last War' and offers now to enlist again in HM. Navy. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation to Africa. Recommendation: no mercy.
