Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition [damaged] (Ann Jones, prisoner's mother) on behalf of John Jones, convicted at the Old Bailey in January 'last', for stealing 4 damask window curtains, value 4/- property of Thomas Rutherford, publican, on 10 December. Evidences supplied by Elizabeth Rutherford, prosecutor's wife; George Vincent and John Greenwood, watchman. Grounds for clemency: first offence, the prisoner had a history of mental illness the 'effects of a violent Fever in his Brain' (had to be restrained in the past with a strait waistcoat and at the time of the crime was carrying around a bundle of hay mixed with brick dust), his mother had thought that he was disturbed on the morning of the crime and she was very much distressed for her son. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: his friends to find security for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence.
