Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 collective petition (10 people, mainly tradesmen, from Whitechapel and Clerkenwell in Middlesex and Minories in Aldgate in London, including the prisoner; individuals offer employment and security) on behalf of John Gapp, peruke maker and hairdresser, convicted at the Old Bailey in April 1790, for stealing 1 cotton handkerchief, value 1/-, property of John Callender, on 3 March 1790. Evidences supplied by John Callender, Francis Bailey and the prisoner. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, has a wife and 3 children, has kept a shop and house at Whitechapel for 14 years, is contrite, had fallen on hard times due to a series of mishaps and accidents beyond his control which led to his being not in his right mind at the time of the crime, and has received an offer of employment and for securities. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Navy and find security for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence.
