Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 collective petition (12 people, from Aldgate, Minories, Hounsditch, Cornhill and others in London, some occupations given) and 1 individual petition (Peter Bonner, first mate on the Willing Tom) on behalf of Robert Jones, seaman, late of the Friendship, a West Indiaman, convicted in February 'last', for stealing 1 calico muslin shawl, value 7/-, property of Philip Goads (used by his wife, a milliner/shopkeeper), in October 1790. Evidences supplied by Philip Goads, Mrs Goads, his wife and the prisoner. Grounds for clemency: first offence, respectable witnesses testified to his previous good character, is a seaman and has a good character for his service at sea, is contrite, his father (a clerk at Messers Prescot and Co. bankers) died when the prisoner was young, and his widowed mother was of excellent character. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Navy and find security for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence.
