Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (John Dalrymple) on behalf of Samuel Yeldham, convicted (with John Ivemay and John Honey) in May 1785, for an assault on Edward Gray, and stealing from him a silver watch and 4/- in money, at Ealing Common in Middlesex on 21 April 1785. Evidences supplied by Edward Gray, Thomas Hammond, William Charlton, from Acton; Christopher Coxford, from Acton (both of the later 2 may have been constables); Edmond Franklin, James Comyns, ----- Shallard, constable[?], John Townsend and the prisoner. Grounds for clemency: already served between 5 to 6 years in confinement (mainly on the Fortune hulk at Langstone), had 5 character witnesses ('Gentlemen') providing him with a previous good character, at the request of Captain Rainier on the Monarch Commander Dalrymple requested the prisoner be put on the Monarch which was bound for the East Indies. Initial sentence: death, commuted to 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Navy and find security for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence.
