Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 George William Barber, seaman, convicted at the Old Bailey in February 1790, for stealing a 'Quadrant' and other articles, value £3:18:0, property of Thomas Barnett, shopkeeper of mathematical instruments. Evidences supplied by Thomas Barnett, William Tuck, servant to Barnett; Abraham Foster, pawnbroker; Thomas Cannon, constable[?]; Benjamin Abrahams, constable and the prisoner. Grounds for clemency: was drunk at the time the crime was committed and the judge wanted to give him the opportunity to retrieve his previous good character. Initial sentence: not given. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Navy and find sureties for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence.
