Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on Thomas Hobson, indicted (with Jonathan Blythe and Thomas Richmond) at the Old Bailey[?] in December 1786, for stealing 2 pieces of cotton, value £3, property of James Hunter and others, businessmen/partners, in November 1786[?]. Evidences supplied by Duncan Hunter, Robert Dawson, Mary Riley and the prisoner. Hunter had been sent for by the public office at Bow Street to identify the goods. These had been manufactured at Glasgow by one of the partners. The goods are said to be part of a ship's cargo wrecked at Yarmouth (although there is some mention of them being smuggled). Grounds for clemency: crime committed with no aggravation and he has already served 3 years of his sentence. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Navy and to find sureties for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence.
Folios 243-244.
