Description

Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (prisoner) on behalf of William Berryman, convicted (with Henry Sykes) at the Old Bailey[?] in May/June 1789, for stealing 4lb of glue and 2lb of nails, value 11 guineas, property of William Rowel and Samuel Bentley; and other articles, value 12/9, property of George Thompson, carpenter (employee of Rowel and Bentley), on 29-30 April. Berryman was an ex- employee of Rowel and Bentley. Evidences supplied by Edward Rowland, George Thomson, Thomas Mitton, Patrick Flint, watchman at St. Giles; John Atkins and both Berryman and Sykes. Grounds for clemency: crime committed with no aggravation, was drunk at the time and willing to enter HM. Forces having previous experience. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Navy and to find sureties for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence.
