Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (prisoner) on behalf of Lemon Barber, seaman, convicted at the Old Bailey in May 1786, for stealing sundry articles ('a Shew Glass & several brushes'), value £1:3:8, property of William Bevan, shopkeeper, on 1 April.1786[?]. Evidences supplied by William Bevan, William Waters, of Justice Hides Office, James Adams and the prisoner. Prisoner currently on the hulk, the Censor at Woolwich. Grounds for clemency: crime committed with no aggravation, good behaviour since conviction, had served in HM. Navy on board HMS Prosepine and HMS Sandwich ['of Ninety Gun'], had fallen out with family members and fallen in with bad company, is penitent, had served 4-5 years (and suffered 'every Distressing Calamity therewith'). Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Navy and to find sureties for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence.
