Description

Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 2 collective petitions (the prisoners; and 3 people, 2 aldermen and 1 an alderman and Member of Parliament) on behalf of Elizabeth Wylie, sewing/needlework worker, and Ann Taylor, laundress, convicted at the Old Bailey in December 1789, for stealing 4 pieces of cambrick, value £3, property of Ann and Ann Maria Tapp, shopkeepers, on 1 December 1789[?]. Evidences supplied by Ann Tapp and Francis Tapp. Grounds for clemency: innocent of the crime, Taylor was a widow with 3 young children, there was a doubt as to their guilt (2 other women may have been involved), recommended to mercy by the jury, 2 witnesses for the prosecution omitted to appear at the trial, the early trial had prevented them from organising some of the character witnesses, previous good character and able to find sureties for their good behaviour. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: to find sureties for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of their sentence.
