Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 2 individual petitions (Sir James Pennyman, baronet and the prisoner) on behalf of Francis Beetle, servant to Sir James Pennyman, indicted at the Old Bailey[?] in May 1789, for stealing 8 shirts and other articles, value £3:13:0 (guilty to 39/-), property of Sir James Pennyman, in the house of Thomas Clark. Evidences supplied by Sir James Pennyman, Joseph Barnes, pawnbroker's servant and Thomas Hindes. Grounds for clemency: age (58 years), first offence, crime committed as a temporary relief for his wife and 3 small children who were in distress and did not intend his employer to lose as he planned to redeem the pledged items. Initial sentence: not given. Recommendation: no mercy.
