Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on John Mayo, convicted at the Old Bailey[?] in December 1789, for assaulting Ann Newbury and stealing a piece of green baize and a cotton gown, value 10/6, from her on the highway, on 6 November. Evidences supplied by Ann Newbury, John Drew and the prisoner. Grounds for clemency: judge considered he 'has friends of good repute' and has been to sea. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Navy and to find sureties for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence.
