Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 collective petition (13 people from Mile End in Middlesex, including churchwardens and an overseer of the poor) on behalf of George Moore alias George Briggs alias Robert Briggs, mariner, convicted (with Robert Farrer) at the Old Bailey[?] in December 1789, for stealing 3 woollen cloth coats and other articles, value £14:15:0, property Samuel Clark, seaman, from the house of Robert Hinton, on 2 November 1789. Evidences supplied by Samuel Clark, William Reilly, servant to Mr Hinton; John Freeyer and the prisoner. Grounds for clemency: had spent 5 years at sea on board the Pallas under Captain Parker, was 'induced by necessity to steal', wishes to serve 'his Majesty', comes from a honest family, no material circumstances of aggravation attended the crime and the mercy petition was 'well supported'. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Navy and to find sureties for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence. Folios 190-193.
