Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (Mary Barker, prisoner's mother) on behalf of Thomas Barker, convicted at the 'last' session at the Old Bailey[?] for stealing a silk handkerchief, value 2/-, property of James Hobby, at Moorfields in St. Leonard's, Shorditch in Middlesex. Evidences supplied by James Hobby and the prisoner. Grounds for clemency: youth (12 years), was fatherless, was innocent (only picked up the handkerchief), first offence, recommended to mercy by the court and prosecutor, there was a witness (a soldier) who was on duty at the time of the trial and not able to give evidence, was now ill (in prison) and lacked nourishment, mother was a poor widow and unable to provide for him in prison, mother also felt grief and is ashamed of these events. Initial sentence: not given. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Navy and to find sureties for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence.
