Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on William Hodges alias Rogers, convicted at the Old Bailey in October 1786, for stealing 5 printed books (The Chinese Traveller, 2 volumes, and 3 volumes of Addison's Miscellanies), value 5/-, property of Richard Floyer, bookseller, on 7-9 October 1786. Evidences supplied by Richard Floyer, Samuel Broderick, -- Dorrington and the prisoner. The prisoner had claimed he had been bound apprentice in Jamaica but had returned home for the good of his health. Grounds for clemency: had no money, was very hungry (stole the items to buy food/drink) and there were no circumstances of aggravation. Initial sentence: not given. Recommendation: if a seaman to enlist in HM Navy, if not to enlist in HM Army, and to find sureties for good behaviour for the time equal to remainder of his sentence.
