Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (Arthur O'Leary, Golden Square) on behalf of William Austin, recently from Cork, convicted at the Old Bailey in February 1790, for stealing a pair of gold bracelets and other articles, value £3, property of Henry Lynham/Lynam, jeweller in the Strand, on 4 February 1790. O'Leary refers to a letter that Colonel Longfield had written to Pitt on the matter. Evidences supplied by John Lynham/Lynam, brother of the victim; John Shellard and Thomas Ting, constables. Found guilty of stealing only. Grounds for clemency: would be well able to serve in HM Forces, the judge considered the prosecutor was able to have prevented the crime (he turned his back on the prisoner in his shop) and so did not approve of the law being 'severe' in this case. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to find security to either enlist in HM. Navy as a seaman, or to transport himself for the period of the sentence, and to secure sureties for the same in either case.
Folios 144-147.
