Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (prisoner; counter signature, illegible) on behalf of Thomas Mullins, footman, indicted (with James Phealen) at the Old Bailey in April 1790, for stealing 2 linen towels and 2 cotton doyleys, valued at 20 pennies (convicted for a 10d doyley), property of Alexander Annesley from Blackfriars in London, sometime before 4 March 1790. Evidences supplied by Alexander Annesley, Bernard Bogle, patrolman[?]; Ann Cullingham, cook and Elizabeth Towsley, servant. Grounds for clemency: youth (21 years), does not believe the law was to be so strict, crime was unintentional as he was entrusted with the doyley, the prosecution was 'Cruel and Malicious', had he wished to steal something it would not be the doyley (which was of no use to him), is contrite and willing to serve in HM. Forces to make amends. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: if a seaman to enlist in HM Navy, if not to transport himself and to secure sureties for the same.
Folios 140-143.
