Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 collective petition (12 people, St. James Piccadilly in Westminster, many give occupations including one Edward Hall, 'Cardmaker to Her Majesty') on behalf of Ann Newland, cook, convicted at the Old Bailey in May 1790, for stealing for 2 pieces of lace and other articles, value £9:6:6 (reduced to 4/-), property of Messers Dyde & Co. of Pall Mall. Evidences supplied by Robert Dyde, Achilles Scribe, warehousemen and William Waters, constable. The judge considered that the reduced valuation by the jury was done 'to save her life'. Grounds for clemency: first offence, previous good character, she was taken on the Thursday and tried on the Saturday and thus had no time to arrange adequate witnesses in her favour, added to which theft was trivial (which also restrained her from seeking other character witnesses) and she has many respectable petitioners. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy.
Folios 137-139.
