Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (prisoner) on behalf of Patrick Egan alias M'Grath, seaman, convicted at the Old Bailey in April 1785, for intent to obtain probate of the will of Christopher Dalton, a deceased seaman (December 1783) of HMS Naiade/Naiad, on 2 October 1784. Evidences supplied by George Player, Clerk to the Navy Office; Samuel Hawkins, Joseph Beck, clerk[?] to Messrs French and Abbot, proctors; John Giles, Navy Agent; James Macintosh, Lieutenant Richard Deschamp, HMS Naiad; Robert Davis, Thomas Morris, Thomas Macmahon, Dr Graham and the prisoner. There is also a letter on the character of the prisoner from Lieutenant Deschamp and a covering letter (copy) from Phil. Stephens of the Admiralty Office. Grounds for clemency: Dalton was a 'Kinsman', the problem was an 'Error in the Will', has served 5 years (now on La Fortune hulk) and behaved well while imprisoned, his ships' officers thought highly of him and had intervened in the original case, he was well behaved and attentive to duty when at sea, and offers to serve in the navy. Initial sentence: death, commuted to 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Navy until he obtain a discharge and provide securities for so doing.
