Description

Report of Lord Kenyon on 1 individual petition (William Salmon) on behalf of John Shergold, of Coate, convicted (with Richard Cook Shergold[?], sentenced to 2 years imprisonment and Michael Liftbeck[?], sentenced to 7 years transportation) at the Wiltshire Summer Assizes at Salisbury in 1789, for grand larceny in stealing a quantity of brass, property of Thomas Bruin/Brown[?]. Evidences supplied by Robert Donovan and Robert -----. Grounds for clemency: has served 1 year in prison, the prisoner is first cousin to Mr James Sutton and the Sutton family wish the young man to be sent into the army in the hope that he be rendered serviceable to his country and so reformed (his brother, also convicted on the same occasion, refuses to follow John's example, and the petition asks if he could be removed to 'distant parts') and an officer in the 35th Regiment has offered to take him. Initial sentence: 2 years in the Devises Bridewell. Recommendation: no mercy, 'it might not be improper if the person applying for mercy was to state some Grounds to suppose that mercy ought to be extended'.
