HO 144
1868-1959
This series comprises files on criminal and certain other subjects, separated and extracted from the main series of Home Office registered papers in HO 45 because of their sensitivity at the time of transfer. The files in HO 144 are policy files and case files relating to a particular individuals, including nationality and naturalisation.
Naturalisation catalogue descriptions for this series were enhanced as part of a project supported by the Friends of The National Archives, 2002-2005.
The catalogue for HO 144 is arranged in subject order within blocks of years. The subject headings used are those used by the Home Office in its registers: HO 46
The catalogue for earlier years and the Index to Naturalisations cite the original Home Office file number only. When ordering these files catalogue reference comprises a box number as well as the file number; from HO 144/1771 onwards the file number is not required. The box number can be found in the packing list shelved with the subject lists (the file should be sought in the appropriate block of years).
The full document reference will be in the following form: HO 144/box number/file number, eg. HO 144/917/180423.
For registers see HO 46
Duplicates of certificates of naturalisation are in HO 334
