Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 2 individual petitions (prisoner and J Nichols, printer), and 2 collective petitions (5 local traders from Southwark in Surrey, occupations given; and 11 members of the Middlesex Jury) on behalf of James Dawes convicted at the Old Bailey, in January 1789, for a highway robbery and stealing a gold watch, chain, 2 cornelian seals, a silk purse and 23 guineas, property of John Bellingham. The prisoner was caught in a crowd near Drury Lane. Evidences supplied by John Bellingham and ----- Macmanus, constable or law officer[?]. Grounds for clemency: judge considered this 'but a slight case against the Prisoner', willing to transport himself, previous good character, first offence and the trial jury supported his petition. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to give security to transport himself for 7 years. Folios 209-214. See also HO 47/9/50, folios 182-183.
