Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 collective petition (17 people, from Clerkenwell in Middlesex, including the minister, churchwardens, and overseers of the poor) on behalf of William Young, convicted the Old Bailey in October 1788, before James Adair, for stealing an iron saw, value 4/-, property of John King, and another iron saw, value at 5/-, property of William Wanford from a shop in Fleet Lane. Grounds for clemency: youth (21 years), was from a reputable family, his aged mother is 'Inconsolable', previous good previous character, has been shamed by the public trial, will be liable to mix with well established criminals, is penitent, first offence and the prisoner has reputable connections in the West Indies and can find securities if allowed to transport himself. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to give security to transport himself for 7 years.
