Second copy of the report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (prisoner) and 1 collective petition (2 people, including a Sheriff and Alderman of London) on behalf of Daniel Hands, dustman and rubbish carter of St. Lukes in Middlesex, convicted at the Old Bailey in May 1787, before Mr. Baron Perryn for receiving 4 bushels of coals, value 3/-, knowing them to be stolen. The prisoner is currently on board the Stanislaus hulk at Woolwich. Evidences supplied by Francis Trevel, ---- Stevenson, a common informer and Armstrong, 'the Officer'. Grounds for clemency: innocent of the crime, false accusation by prosecutor after a dispute concerning his weekly bill, and that two other men (Thomas Larney and William Shaw) had already been convicted of the crime in the preceding April sessions, prisoner has already served two years, worked in his job for the last 10 years, has a wife and four children, and has no need for coals since he collected enough through his work as a dustman. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Recommendation: to transport himself for the term of 14 years and give security to that effect. Folios 189-191. See also HO 47/9/41, folios 155-156.
