Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on James Watts and Francis Hardy, convicted for an assault and stealing 7/-, property of John Austin, of Gough Square. The assault took place in St. Clements churchyard after Watts had asked to borrow 1/-. Hardy hit Austin on the chest and took 7/6 from his pocket. Hardy had previously been accused of an assault on a Mr Harrison following Harrison's threat to charge him with an act of sodomy. Although Austin periodically suffered bouts of madness, his testimony and that of his wife Mary is said to appear reliable. Initial sentence: death[?]. Evidence supplied by John Austin. Initial sentence: death, commuted to [not given]. Recommendation: no further mercy.
Folios 170-171.
