Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (prisoner) on behalf of William Stephenson, convicted at the Old Bailey in June 1789, for stealing 3/6 from the cash register of his employer George Porter/Potter, haberdasher of Charing Cross in St. Martin in the Fields in Middlesex. Evidences supplied by Joseph Dixon, victualler, who swore that Potter knew that he owed Stephenson £58 but would not pay him because he was convicted of stealing 3/6 from him; and George Goulding, grocer, who swore that Potter promised to pay Stephenson his £58 if he did not call friends as witnesses or employ council to defend himself, and pleaded guilty. Grounds for clemency: innocent of the crime[?], prisoner was owed money by the prosecutor, was encouraged by the prosecutor to perjure himself, the sum stolen was small and it was his first offence. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to transport himself for 7 years and give security for doing so.
Folios 157-163.
