Letter sent under instruction from the Recorder of London. A report cannot be sent at present as the presiding judge, Mr Justice Ashurst, is absent. This being the case a transcript from the short-hand notes taken at the trial is enclosed. The transcript concerns Richard Manley, journeyman bookbinder, indicted on 23 May, for stealing 7 printed bound books, value 20/-, property of Thomas Cadell, bookshop keeper, on 23 May 1789 (same day). Evidences supplied by Thomas Cardell, William Davis, servant to Cardell; Archibald Ruthwin and the prisoner. The books were: 4 volumes of Pope's Homer, The Triumph of Temper, Blair's Geography and Dr. Gregory's Father's Legacy. The prisoner was found with the books on him and admitted guilt. Folios 137-140.
