Description

Certificate/memorial of Edward Willes on prisoners convicted at Lancashire and recommended for mercy on the conditions set against their names:

1. Thomas Smith, William Shore, Samuel Midgley and John Winter, convicted at the 'last' Lancashire Assizes at Lancaster, for breaking and entering the dwelling house at night and stealing goods, property of Ellen/Ellin Braddock. Grounds for clemency: 'some favourable Circumstances' appearing on their trials. Initial sentence: not given. Recommendation: Smith, Shore and Midgley - 7 years transportation; Winter - 2 years imprisonment in the Castle of Lancaster.

2. Edward Barlow, convicted at the 'last' Lancashire Assizes at Lancaster, for feloniously breaking and entering the dwelling house in the daytime (no person therein), and stealing goods and monies, value above 5/-, of Henry Whalley. Grounds for clemency: 'some favourable Circumstances'. Initial sentence: not given. Recommendation: 2 years imprisonment in the Castle of Lancaster.

3. Ann Whittle, convicted for felony at the Lancashire Quarter Sessions. Grounds for clemency: has served 3 years in the Castle of Lancaster Gaol pending execution of sentence 'by reason of the impracticability of Carrying such sentence into Execution', being an aged woman and other 'favourable Circumstances'. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation to the West Indies. Recommendation: remission of sentence.
