Report of Edward Willes on John Fortune, convicted at the Yorkshire Assizes on 5 March 1785[?], for stealing linen cloth from a bleaching croft, value 1/-. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner had received some promise upon turning 'Evidence for the Crown' which led to his conviction and that of his accomplices. Initial sentence: death, reprieved. Recommendation: 7 years transportation.
