Report of Beaumont Hotham on John Tapsel alias John Taper, convicted at the Cornwall Assizes at Launceston, on 22 March 1782, for sheep stealing. Grounds for clemency: had remained in confinement pending execution of his sentence and had behaved well in prison, he prevented other prisoners from escaping from the prison by informing the keeper and thereby 'frustrated their plans', has a wife and a child who are 'rendered miserable' by his imprisonment, is repentant of his offence and has resolved to lead a good life in future, (prisoner had begged the judge to act in mercy on his behalf). Initial sentence: death, commuted to 7 years transportation to America. Recommendation: remission of sentence.
