Description

Certificate/memorial of Edward Willes on those capitally convicted at the 'last' Lent Assizes held for Yorkshire and the 'last' Summer Assizes for the City of York, reprieved for favourable circumstances appearing on their trials and recommended for mercy on the conditions set against their names:

Yorkshire Assizes

1. David Butler, for grand larceny without benefit of statute, recommended to 2 years hard labour on the River Thames.

2. David Thompson, for burglary, recommended to 2 years hard labour on the River Thames.

3. George Angus, for stealing heifers, recommended to 2 years hard labour on the River Thames.

4. William Cockell, for highway robbery, recommended to 2 years hard labour on the River Thames.

5. Edward Thompson, for sheep stealing, recommended to 2 years hard labour on the River Thames.

6. Catherine Beckwith, for sheep stealing, recommended to 2 years hard labour in the Wakefield House of Correction for the West Riding.

7. Robert Briggs, for sheep stealing, recommended to 2 years hard labour on the River Thames.

8. John Wilson and Thomas Harwood, for horse stealing, recommended to 2 years hard labour on the River Thames

City of York

9. John Capes, for burglary, has remained in prison ever since without any recommendation. Upon consultation with the Lord Mayor of York, recommended to 2 years hard labour on the River Thames.

10. George Haigh and Thomas Tinsley, for killing a sheep with intent to steal the carcase, have remained in prison ever since without any recommendation. Upon consultation with the Lord Mayor of York, recommended to 2 years hard labour on the River Thames.
