Report of William Burleton/ William Burleson, Recorder of Leicester, on William Langham, indicted (with Robert Weston, William Harbut and George Wetherell) at the Exeter Sessions in 1783, for a highway robbery committed with force and violence and stealing 1/-, 2 sixpences, 1 handkerchief, 3 keys and a tobacco box, property of William Harrison (but were unable to take a purse containing 21 guineas from his hand). Grounds for clemency: had signed a confession before the mayor prior to the trial which was not produced in court against him, was given a very good character reference (by credible people) previous to his recent connections, his petition [wanting] is signed by gentlemen of honour and credit who strongly argue his case. Initial sentence: not given. Recommendation: 'a proper object of his Majesty's mercy'.
Folios 201-202.
