Letter from Mr M Ley, Town Clerk of Exeter, enclosing a certificate of recommendation by the deputy mayor, recorder and others, on behalf of John Cartey and Joseph Hall, convicted, at the last Exeter Assizes, Devon, on 24 May 1784, for being at large before their sentence of transportation had expired (they had escaped from the transport ship Mercury after receiving sentence. Ley also asks for an opinion on two other convicts, Thomas Brown and John Jones, due to be executed. Grounds for clemency: unspecified favourable circumstances appearing in their favour during the trial. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: mercy.
