Report/letter from Richard Burke, recorder of Bristol, to Lord Sydney. Not having any knowledge of the case he had had forwarded the petition [wanting] to John Anderson, Mayor of Bristol and received a letter in reply (enclosed), dated 26 February 1784, in favour of George Nicholas, convicted by late Lord Ashburton, at the last[?] session of gaol delivery held at Newgate in Bristol, for stealing 2 calves. The letter from John Anderson also includes a very informal entry that 'Mrs Anderson presents her compliments'. Grounds for clemency: has been in confinement for more than 22 months pending orders to be executed, had acted through 'folly and simplicity', and other circumstances 'of his Case'. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: free pardon, Anderson states 'it will be an act of humanity and benevolence' if pardon is granted.
