A letter/petition from the high sheriff and grand jury for Wiltshire (16 people, including James Sutton, sheriff) on the overcrowded state of their gaols. Report prepared during the assizes held at Salisbury on 5 March 1785. Stating that the number of prisoners sentenced for transportation held at the common gaol has increased since the last 2 Assizes. More are added to the already overcrowded state from the present assizes. Physicians employed to inspect the state of prisons and prisoners warn of a gaol distemper epidemic and request the prisoners for transportation be removed with immediate effect.
