Report of James Adair, Recorder of London, on Richard alias Jonas Woolridge, convicted at the Old Bailey on 25 February 1784, for knowingly putting off a piece of counterfeit milled money resembling half a guinea for a lower value that the denomination imported. Grounds for clemency: claimed benefit of clergy (his request was entered on records as 'counter plea' as the Crown declared that he had received clergy). Time was given until the next session, later witnesses of the Mint wished not to 'press the matter' against the prisoner. Plea-bargaining took place, prisoner confessed on the assurance that he should be recommended for a conditional pardon. Initial sentence: death recorded commuted to 12 months imprisonment. Recommendation: free pardon, the prisoner having served 12 months but no conditional pardon having been issued.
Folios 122-123.
