Report of Mr Sergeant Kirby/Kerby on William Hobson, servant to Mrs Ball, convicted at the 'last' quarter[?] sessions for Southampton in Hampshire, for obtaining half a pound of tapioca by false pretences, property of William Phine, shopkeeper, on 10 November 1788. Grounds for clemency: the judge was unhappy at the trial as to whether the indictment fell within the terms of the act (30th Geo II) and after consultation with others judge there was an agreement this was not so (prisoner had been in prison for 3 months). Initial sentence: not given. Recommendation: immediate discharge.
