Report of Richard Arden and Edward Bearcroft on several prisoners convicted at the Chester Assizes and recommended for mercy on the condition set against their names:
1. John Crine, convicted in spring 1784, for having in his custody implements for coining. Grounds for clemency: prisoner was successfully employed teaching his fellow prisoners to read and write. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: free pardon.
2. Robert Williams, convicted in spring 1786, for breaking and entering a dwelling house and stealing to the value of 50/-. Grounds for clemency: first offence and behaved well while in prison. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation. free pardon.
3. John Cummins, convicted in April 1784, for stealing shop goods to the value of 50/-. Grounds for clemency: prisoner discovered a plot by inmates that would have put the gaolers life in great danger. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation. free pardon.
